The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
