The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.
This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.
His child, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a custody hearing on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was determined responsible of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill his opponent and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, many his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, the capital city.
The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and return him to office.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
