Top Selection

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique tackles the tyranny of feminine aesthetics as well as the dreaded aspects of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a masterful portrayal playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress demoted to hosting a workout series on television. Forced aside thanks to her slimy boss her manager Harvey, she turns to a mysterious and gruesome treatment known as "The Substance". This generates a new version of herself named Sue, culminating in an increasingly vampiric relationship among both women. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque thriller features Knightley as Laura, an ace reporter who takes a hiatus from covering international wars to board a luxury cruise alongside a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her partner, as well as other filthy rich guests. But after a mysterious woman disappears from the ship overnight and everyone denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Streaming currently, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries in this innovative supernatural story filmed completely through the eyes of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the poltergeist, and it seems defensive toward her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his cult stardom in this autobiographical spoof. He plays a narcissistic Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who accepts a $1m payday to attend a festive event on the Spanish island for the rich superfan Javi. Recruited by government spies to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, his unique performing skills proves useful. October 11th, evening, on Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's locked-room horror remains effective without requiring a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of disappearances has rendered the local kids on edge. When Finney is taken by the kidnapper and imprisoned in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices giving advice, and the intuitive nightmares of his sister Gwen might rescue him. An effective horror. October 11th, nighttime, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who declares initially, asserting religious justification for riches. Both individuals set about profiting from the American public's spiritual convictions. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though the lead actress achieves to show the character with compassion. Next Tuesday, early morning, the Film4 channel

This Espionage Thriller

The current week's additional entry by the same director is a spy mystery as tight like the turtlenecks sported by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer. He is tasked to discover a mole inside the organization from five suspects – including is his own wife. Both actors are experts of calm composure, so a delicious mind game of fact versus fiction takes place. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela participate the clever spy entertainment. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
