EU Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
